African American collection, 1823-1979.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, journal issues, broadsides, sheet music, and sound recordings relating to African Americans and their place in American society and culture during the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection includes correspondence and legal documents relating to the purchase of slaves (1823-1828), broadsides depicting African Americans during the later part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, correspondence and manuscripts by Langston Hughes, and issues of periodicals published by members of the African American community. African American sheet music and sound recordings of jazz performances by such notables as Fats Waller, Ethel Waters and Bessie Smith are also included in the collection.
